Healing Action
About
Healing Action Network partners with survivors and communities to end trafficking and exploitation across Missouri. We focus on safety, healing, and long-term recovery through advocacy, therapy, peer support, case management, housing assistance, and community education. Every survivor’s path is unique—and each step forward is worth celebrating. The stories below are composites drawn from real experiences, shared with care, and edited to protect privacy.
“Anita”—Finding Stability Through Therapy and Case Management
When “Anita” first visited our drop-in space, she was exhausted from years of instability and pressure from people who had profited from her exploitation. She wanted to feel safe, sleep through the night, and rebuild relationships with her kids.
What support looked like
Safety & Basic Needs: A case manager helped Anita secure a phone, bus passes, and a same-day appointment for medical care.
Therapy: Anita began weekly sessions with a licensed therapist focused on coping skills, grounding techniques, and processing trauma at her pace.
Care Coordination: With releases in place, her case manager coordinated with healthcare providers and legal aid, reduced duplicate appointments, and mapped out a simple, achievable plan.
Skills & Goals: Together, they built routines around work readiness, budgeting, and reconnecting with family in safe, supported ways.
What changed
Within a few months, Anita reported fewer panic episodes, better sleep, and confidence using coping skills in stressful moments. She re-established regular contact with her children and set a clear path toward a credential program she’d once thought was out of reach. Most important to her: “I don’t feel alone anymore. I know who to call, and I have tools that actually work.”
“Danielle”—A Safe Home for Her Family and Strength Through Peer Support
“Danielle,” a mother of two, came to Healing Action Network after leaving a dangerous situation. She had a job offer but no stable place to sleep and worried constantly about keeping her kids safe.
What support looked like
Housing Assistance: Our team helped Danielle secure short-term hotel support followed by a rapid-rehousing placement, covering deposit assistance and part of the first months’ rent while she stabilized income.
Peer Support Specialist: Danielle met weekly with a peer support specialist—someone with lived experience trained to provide practical help and encouragement. Together they created safety plans, practiced landlord conversations, and role-played boundary setting with extended family.
Family Essentials: Community partners provided beds, linens, and starter kitchen items; Danielle received gift cards for groceries and school supplies.
Ongoing Connection: As her hours at work increased, the peer specialist checked in about child-care options, transportation routes, and how to maintain her support network during busy weeks.
What changed
With a lease in her name and a consistent income, Danielle’s family settled into a routine—homework at the table, bedtime at a predictable hour, and weekends at the park. She describes the difference this way: “We have a door that locks, a plan that makes sense, and people who believe in us. That’s how healing starts.”
